Description:
'Memorable Encounters - Alaska and Antarctica’
Southeast Alaska, The Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia are among Berit's favorite places to work - with stunning scenery and abundant wildlife.
Southeast Alaska has the largest temperate rainforest in the world, as well as glaciers, fjords, brown and black bears, seals and sea lions, humpback whales, killer whales, and sea otters.
The Antarctic Peninsula is awesomely beautiful, with ice in so many forms - glaciers, icebergs, sea ice, ice sheets, and enormous tabular icebergs. The biggest land animal on Antarctica is a midge! Surrounding waters are home to seals, humpback whales, killer whales and many species of penguins.
South Georgia is an island in the Southern Ocean which is a two day 'sail’ northeast from the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, and it has huge colonies of king penguins, Southern elephant seals, and Antarctic fur seals.
About Berit:
Berit has worked as Naturalist with Lindblad Expeditions since 1992 in a wide variety of locations around the world. Her specialty is marine life - from marine mammals to plankton. While working on the small Lindblad/National Geographic ships, it is her job to help guests understand their environment through onboard presentations, or while cruising in Zodiacs, kayaking, snorkeling, or leading hikes ashore. Prior to Lindblad she taught oceanography on a teaching research vessel at U/Mass Boston. She also worked as trip leader/scientist on traditional sailing ships, during trips which focused on oceanography, marine ecology, or whales.
