The Finns Are Coming
LCYC to Host Major Finn Regattas
This coming July, LCYC has the unique privilege of hosting the Finn Eastern Championship (July 15-16) and the Finn North American Championship (July 18-20). We are expecting 20-25 boats from as far away as California, Oregon, Mississippi and even one competitor from Australia. The 2008 Canadian Olympic Finn representative is also planning to be here. He will be competing in this event just prior to leaving for China.
Finns will begin arriving on Monday July 14th for the Easterns, which will be used as a tune-up regatta for the NAs. Those here for the Easterns will be measured in on that day. Racing for that event will be on Shelburne Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday, with racing wrapping up around mid-afternoon Wednesday so as not to interfere with Wednesday night racing. Thursday is a lay-day for the fleet, and will be used as an additional day for measurement for boats arriving just for the NAs. The NAs will start on Friday and will be sailed on the broad lake, in the vicinity of Juniper Island.
The biggest impact on our club will be parking on Wednesday night. We'll consolidate the Finns as best as possible in the south parking lot. Given the reduction in parking space, we encourage Wednesday night skippers and crews to carpool if possible. We'll also be moving any dinghies on the beach just to the north of the ramp to dinghy row, alongside the ramp. This will provide room for Finns there and help free up parking spaces. If your dinghy is on the beach you may want to relocate it for us.
The race committee will use the Dinse, as well as 3-4 powerboats to help set courses and take care of other on-the-water duties. These will be kept in the space between two of the finger docks, immediately adjacent to the Dinse dockage area. Please respect the sign asking that that section be kept open.
Our race committee is set, but we could still use a few volunteers for on-shore activities, such as measurement assistance, registration and setting up for meals, which will be provided to racers on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. If you're interested being a part of this great event, contact Dave Powlison: 985-9484. We also encourage you to come out and watch the races. It's not often that we have an Olympic class holding a major championship in our own backyard!
