Arnold Brown Regatta Report

The Northern Vermont High School Sailing Team (NVHSST) trekked out to Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday, September 16. Arriving on the island on Sunday via ferry, they went to Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, where the Arnold Brown Invitational was held. This annual regatta was sailed in 420s and drew 12 teams from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. When the team first arrived, the harbor was absolutely calm. But, the A fleet rigged and went out. Nick Aswad and Meredith Powlison (LCYC) represented NVHSST in this fleet. They finished mid-fleet in the first race, but they had a bullet in the second race and led all the way around the course. On the final upwind leg, their roll tacks put distance on the second place boat during a tacking duel. The A fleet had one more set of 2 races after this, finishing third in the A fleet. The B fleet, sailed by Connor Aswad, Sarah Chickanosky (LCYC) and alternate Allyson Jarry also got in two sets, with a best finish of 4th. The shifty winds ranged from nothing to around 6 knots during the last set, and the courses were short triangles. NVHSST finished 5th overall. Next weekend, Nick, Connor and Meredith will travel to Greenwich to race Lasers in the Healy Trophy. Photo of NVHSST with Marblehead team on the ferry:
