NVHSST End-of-Season Report

End-of-Season Report

The Northern VT High School Sailing Team (NVHSST) ended the fall 2006 season on Tuesday with a final practice. I thought we would talk about some highlights of the season to show others what the team has accomplished this season:

1. We started our practices on the first day of school and sailed Monday, Tuesday and Thursday until October 17. We only had to cancel a few practices, which is remarkable. We usually had seven or more 420s out. We also got to take advantage of the trapezes on our new 420s on two windy occasions, which most of us consider to be the best days of the season.

2. September 10th: Polar Bear Open at Bowdoin College in Maine.
We got to sail Larks on a perfect fall day. The NVHSST team placed fifth, and CVU placed tenth. Plus we got to meet a cool Coldstone Creamery guy named Julian.

3. September 17th: Arnold Brown Invitational in Martha’s Vineyard.
NVHSST (composed of Nick, Meredith, Connor, Sarah and Allyson) sailed 420s on a light wind day on the Vineyard. The A team finished third with a great bullet in the second race. Overall, the team placed fifth out of twelve teams. And there was the elusive hunt for lobster rolls.

4. September 24th: Healy Trophy in Greenwich, CT.
NVHSST went to Greenwich to sail laser radials on this ridiculously windy day. There were 32 boats in the radial class: Nick was 18th, Meredith 21st and Connor 30th. The winds picked up to around 18 knots by the end of the day, and the chop was short and hard to get around. But it was a great workout!

5. October 1st: Casco Bay Open in Maine.
A younger NVHSST team traveled to Maine to compete in this annual 420 regatta. I do not know much about this one—anyone can add a comment with more info.
This same weekend, Tyler, Nick, Connor and John went to Lake George for Changing of the Colors in a J/24. They were 33rd out of 58 boats.

6. Final Regatta of the year: Gleekman Fall Funfest in Boston.
What do you get when you mix Cape Cod Mercuries, light winds, 18 NVHSST sailors, the Charles River and a 4:45 AM bus ride? An NVHSST victory! Congratulations to the NVHSST team of Nick, Sarah, Connor and Max who won this 20 boat regatta by 14 points (a great margin). CVU (Meredith, Jackson, John, Abram) placed twelfth, NVHSST #2 (Ian, Chris, Tyler, Jenny) was 14th and SB (Chris, Lauren, David, Tom, Matt) was 16th. And no dead squirrels in the water this year!

Thanks to Coach Rachael Miller and Assistant Coach Bretton Gardner. A big thank-you goes to parents who drove us up and down New England, as well.
Pictures will be posted soon.
If you know of anyone (sailor, non-sailor) who would be interested in the team, encourage them to sail with us in the spring or next fall. We are always looking to fill up our boats and build the team!

Cruising

Lake Champlain offers some of the best freshwater cruising in North America. The beautiful scenery and charming lakeside destinations make it a great place to explore. LCYC organizes several rendezvous events. Spontaneous cruising events also materialize throughout the season. We have a number of scheduled events planned for the summer season. Cruisers are out and about just about every weekday and weekend throughout the summer.
