DO WE SAIL TO OUR RATINGS?
In the chart below I have used the HAKA PHRF to calculate the actual difference in seconds per mile for each boat. I then calculated the time difference using PHRF. I assumed that K-2 sailed to her handicap. I then calculated the difference between the actual time difference and the time expected by PHRF. I have then ranked the boats in the fleet by the seconds per mile they vary from the calculated handicap against K-2. (2006 data.)
The “Variation” column is how many seconds a boat sails slower than PHRF expects.
There are problems with the methodology, but it does show that only three boats racing close to their handicap. Are the handicaps for the rest of us unfair or do we have a case of the “slows”?
This data does show that Sur Real Escape sails faster than her handicap. We know how to adjust for that.

ARE WE GETTING BETTER
Where is Ernie?
A review of the HAKA PHRF of boats in the fleet for the last three years suggests that there is very little variation in our competitiveness. A change in .1000 in a HAKA PHRF number equates to a minute a mile. This means .01 is six seconds a mile change.
Looking at the data below raises more questions than it answers. I have not verified the accuracy or done any cross checking. But if you were improving your performance under the present system how would you know? Under HAKA PHRF your rating would go up.
There are many ways to improve and to verify how you sail your boat. If it is a one design, race off the lake against similar boats.
Another useful technique is to find a “sailing buddy” to test sail against. Have the other boat maintain constant speed while you adjust your rig to maximize speed. This can be used to optimize performance in many aspects of sailing.
But it only works if both parties cooperate. I had an agreement with Ernie Pomerleau to improve performance this summer, but he has failed to show. Next time you see him, ask what is holding him back from his best?
