The Northern Vermont High School Sailing Team (NVHSST) traveled to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine on September 9th. The Polar Bear Open, a regional high school regatta, was held on the 10th. NVHSST was represented by Nick Aswad and Sarah Chickanowsky in the “A†fleet. Lauren Harris (LCYC) crewed for Connor Aswad in the “B†fleet. Meredith Powlison (LCYC) and Tyler Colvin (LCYC) represented CVU in the “Aâ€, and John Hill (LCYC) skippered for Ian Hunt in “Bâ€. The 12 schools at the regatta sailed in Larks, a distinctive cross between a 420 and an FJ. Five races were sailed on a gorgeous, sunny fall afternoon. The sailing was in an enclosed inlet where the wind came directly from the shore. Therefore, it was shifty and gusty, averaging anywhere from six knots to around 16. Most sailors found the conditions frustrating, as it was challenging to predict the favored side of the first leg. Despite these tricky sailing conditions, NVHSST finished in fifth place overall. CVU was tenth. The team is off to Martha's Vineyard for the Arnold Brown Invitational on September 17th. For more info on high school sailing in New England, visit www.nessa-sailing.org
