Special LCYC Pre-Workday for Docks

On Saturday, April 29th (April 30th rain date), the LCYC Docks will be prepped for launch the following weekend on official Workday. Members who want to take this special opportunity to help out the club should contact Mike Barker. The work will include repairing damaged floats and planks, sealing, and upgrading the elctrical and water service. If the work goes into the afternoon, lunch will be provided.

Awnings same day......

Mike, this sounds good. As you know, Bob T and I will coordinate a crew to put up the awnings the same day so we'll have to coordinate on the lunches if necessary. Ernie

Ethernet cable

Hey, is there any way that we could add a couple of runs of ethernet cable in the docks when the electrical gets upgraded? Home Depot has 1000 foot spools for about $70. Some time in the future I want to experiment with providing wireless internet to the mooring field, so it would be beneficial if we could put in some of the infrastructure. It would be great to be able to publish race results to this site from the committee boat at the dock or nearby, before the Burger Burn even gets filled up!

wireless at LCYC

Jason, I am in the process of doing some research on wireless at LCYC at the request of new Board member Ted Latrell. I received a quote from Adelphia last year and am just trying to get it updated. Last year they qouted $99 to install and $129/month for the service. The unresloved issue was the seasonal use. I left a message with the guy at Adelphia yesterday and hope to speak to him today. The idea was to have the service available at the clubhouse and then install a router that would have a signal strong enough to reach the mooring field.

Wireless Routers

There are several inexpensive wireless router models from Linksys (Cisco) that run Linux and have 3rd-party firmware available for them which makes them easy to setup for this sort of application. This also includes user configurable power usage, up to FCC limits. I have two of these units and a three foot external antenna. each unit can also be set to act as a bridge or repeater, so we can setup more than one to increase our coverage area, and only one has to be directly connected to the internet.

If we setup a unit at the top of the stairs and/or the end of the docks, I think we could get really good coverage. I'd be happy to give a demonstration or explain more details. The bottom line is that we can do it ourselves with very little investment. I'm really glad that you, Ted and others are interested in this project, especially at the BOG level.

Feel free to contact me regarding this. My info is on my website: hyerstay.com

Cheers,

very good for RC

obviously, this would be much appreciated by Race Committee. It would allow the scoring to be done in a more efficient manner and.....help us to get rid of the fax machine. Other obvious bene's are to be able to work on your boat. Now we'll really have an excuse to be "On Call" so to speak while sitting at the mooring.
The obvious fly in the ointment will be the monthly charge.

Adelphia is realizing the value of their service's and for them it seems to be "skys the limit". Wish there was an alternative..........

wireless at LCYC

I was able to speak to the guy at Adelphia yesterday.

He's sending somebody out to check the proposed installation so we can get a firm estimate on that cost. Last year he quoted $99 to install.

He would give the club an open-ended(unsigned) contract so we could cancel at the end of the season and not break any contract. By the spring of 2007 Comcast will have taken over Adelphia so we could reconnect with them.

The monthly charge he is currently quoting is $99.

Once I get all of the information from Adelphia I wll pass it on to Ted Latrell and he in turn will bring it up at the next Board meeting.

Should we get some ethernet

Should we get some ethernet cable and run it down the docks on Saturday? If we wait for the board, we won't have another chance to run a network cable in the docks until next year. We can certainly wait on dealing with Adelphia, but let's not miss this chance to put one piece of the infrastructure in place.

Ethernet Cable

A continous cable can't be installed until the docks are launched and connected together. We can lay the cable in the service duct during regular Workday on May 6th if that is the decision, or after Workday for that matter. The details should be sorted out before we install an Ethernet cable.

wireless coverage

Tyler Colvin's picture

the most powerful routers (802.11g) can only project for a 150 ft radius, but you can install an range extender at the edge of the coverage to create a hotspot on the docks. You might want to add a couple down there, as connection speed noticibly decreases the further from the router you get.
