We Are Reluctantly Cancelling the 2012 Macdonough Race

Around 5 pm today (Friday), LCYC Commodore Chris Leopold and I were on the phone with WCAX meteorologist Dan Dowling about weather conditions for Saturday’s Macdonough Race. He advised us that conditions on the lake Saturday will become severe by late afternoon/early Saturday evening, thanks to a very strong cold front that extends from north of Montreal all the way south to NYC. Dan said that the front is solid from end to end and will contain winds that could gust to around 60 mph. The winds will be accompanied by frequent lightning.

Conditions on the lake prior to the front coming through are not to be taken lightly either, with south winds at 20-30 knots, gusting as high as 40 knots.

Our primary concern is for the safety of all participants.  No race is worth risk of life.  No doubt, we might second guess ourselves when all is said and done, but you can seldom go wrong by erring on the side of caution.  Therefore, we are reluctantly cancelling the 2012 Macdonough Race.

If you know someone who was planning on participating in this year’s event and might be out of the loop in this communication, would you please contact them as soon as possible.

As a side note, LCYC has traditionally hosted a pancake and sausage breakfast prior to this event.  This will still take place starting at 8 am.  Donations of $4 will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks for your understanding.

Cruising

Lake Champlain offers some of the best freshwater cruising in North America. The beautiful scenery and charming lakeside destinations make it a great place to explore. LCYC organizes several rendezvous events. Spontaneous cruising events also materialize throughout the season. We have a number of scheduled events planned for the summer season. Cruisers are out and about just about every weekday and weekend throughout the summer.
