Trophies & Awards

Here are the history and recipients of each of the club's racing trophies, updated through 2010. [The seemingly whimsical alignment and spacing of the data columns is determined by the as yet invisible logic of the applicable website application.]

Champagne Race — Any Sails or None

WHIMSICAL CRUISING RACE
• THE CHAMPAGNE RACE •

The First and Last Boats To Get There, and Others Too

We are currently researching the history of this whimsical cruising race that is like no other. The starts are in inverse order based on rated comparative speed – slowest first and fastest last. Competitors may use any sails or none. The finish is at a pleasant bay or harbor suitable for convivial afternoon rafting or shoreside gathering for the awarding festivities and suitable for overnight anchoring to recover from the rigors of racing and rewarding. And the trophies - bottles of champagne - are 'traveling' only in the sense that after opening they must be freely passed around.

If anyone has managed to remember past 'winners' and has or can still write them down for us, we will list them. And for sure we will record them for you in the future. Maybe this will entice you to try to become one of those listed.

Double Handed — Jib & Main - Class A

DOUBLE HANDED RACE
• Jib & Main Class A •

First on Corrected Time

This race was created in 1986 by Regatta chair Peter Phillips as a revival of an earlier race for short-handed crew. In 1972 Regatta co-chairs Hal Greig and Bob Vitali created the Single Handed Race, which, after declining participation, was last raced in 1978 – a few high-winded races produced some scary tales, and the Regatta Committee of the time decided the race was too risky to continue. Phillips rightly guessed that a race for two would be safer and more acceptable than a race for one, yet would offer a similar challenge.

There never have been any trophies for this event, and results were not saved until 1994, and some of those intervening years are missing.

In 2000, the Etchells, a 30' 3-4 person keelboat, began a rapid gain in popularity at LCYC. By 2001 the club fleet had grown to seven boats, and through the efforts of Dave Powlison, the International Etchells Class recognized the enthusiastic group as Etchells Fleet 25. In that same year Ernie Reuter, in honor of Rudy Kelemen, a past member of the Lake Geneva Yacht Club's "Old Guard" and a family member, submitted the Kelemen Cup to the Club as a trophy to be awarded annually to the overall season winner.

38th Running — 2011

First run October 6, 1974, this race was conceived in 1973 by Commodore Robert W. Henshaw and Regatta Chair Dale Hyerstay as an informal finish to the racing and social seasons, combining a race of the hot-ruddered bums followed by hot buttered rum for racers and non-racers alike around a cozy fire in the clubhouse fireplace.

There have never been any traveling trophies for this race, and for many years records of the winners were not kept. We will be trying to construct records for as far back as we can find data on file.

The Ladies Cup is a richly ornamental sterling silver punch-bowl, with fine engraving of the harbor of Burlington on the outside, the bottom rim consisting of a sculpted depiction of the rugged stone breakwater. It was made by ???? in 1887 or 1888 at a cost of $500, and was presented to the club by the Ladies of Burlington. We do not know for sure who the 'Ladies' were, but it is presumed that they were the wives of the founding members of the club. The cup was first raced for in 1888.

The following text is excerpted from an article by Frederic W. Mather, "Lake Champlain Yacht Club," published in Yachting Magazine in 1888:

"According to the rules of the club, 'the Ladies Cup" shall be a perpetual challenge, and shall be sailed for each year by the yachts belonging to the members of the club at their annual regatta. The course shall be about ten miles, and the sailing allowances, etc., shall be governed by such rules of the club, as from time to time may obtain. The course, etc., may be changed from time to time by the regatta committee as the exigencies of the club may require.

"They or their successors in office, are made custodians of the cup for the club, and shall award the same each year to the successful yacht; which yacht shall have its name and the date of the regatta engraved on the cup by the committee, and shall hold it until the next annual regatta, giving bonds to the committee in the sum of $600 for the safe keeping of the same.

"Any damage or loss to the cup while in the possession of a yacht shall be appraised and deduced by the committee from the bond on the return of the cup, which shall be one week before the next annual meeting. Owners of yachts failing to return the cup at the time specified, shall sacrifice their bonds and cease to be members of the club.

"A yacht holding the cup and not competing for its possession is considered as having competed and lost. In all races, at least three yachts must start or no race, unless a race has been postponed; but should the yacht which is in possession of the cup be a competitor, she may sail the course, without this limit as to the number starting."

In 1934 the last of the club's three Burlington waterfront clubhouses had to be abandoned, and the membership tried to keep active at several temporary locations in Shelburne Bay and Mallets Bay. But the last of the depression and the coming war caused the club to become inactive. The last Ladies Cup event of that era, a power boat race, was in 1938, won by the Eva May, owned by a man named Appleyard, the beloved step-son of Bob Thompson, Commodore 1948-54.

In 1955, in an effort to help revive the waterfront, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce sponsored a 'Northeastern Waterama.' John Dinse remembers it as a broad-based city event, of which boat races were a minor part featuring mostly powerboats. Although inactive, LCYC still existed as a corporation, with a printed log listing 87 members. The Board agreed to let the Chamber include a Ladies Cup race as one of the Waterama events, the first race for the cup since 1938. The winner was Royal Savage, owned by member Paul D. Raine. The Chamber allowed Raine to take the cup home. The next year the LCYC Board determined that the cup was too unique and valuable and voted that the club would henceforth retain the Ladies Cup in its possession, ending forever allowing the winner to 'hold' the cup for any period of time.

Ladies Cup races were a feature of the Waterama from 1955 through 1961, and club records show that all of those were won by members of record: Ted Brooks won four in Kid, a 6 Meter; Raine won one; and Bill Freeman in Corlear won one; another was won by 'Camp Red Cloud' of Deep Bay in Eleanor, a wooden schooner.

In the first race in 1888, and presumably in subsequent years until the club's demise in 1938, the winner was decided on the basis of corrected time. Nothing is presently known about the scoring criteria used during the Wateramas of 1955-61. However, beginning in 1962, when the club was reactivated, the winner was the first boat to finish without regard to corrected time. Later, in 1992, the Board of Governors voted to return to the original and traditional criteria that the winner of the Ladies Cup shall be decided on the basis of first-to-finish on corrected time, thus re-openibng to all LCYC competitors the possibility of winning the cup.

Beginning with the first race in 1888, also since 1963, and perhaps in all races since the inception of the race, there is only one start for all boats contending for the Ladies Cup. For the three years 1994-96, a period of active recruitment of new LCYC racers, there was a separate start for the non-spinnaker boats to reduce the intimidation of a single mass start, the presumption being that they would not be contenders in any case. In 1997 the now seasoned non-spinnaker racers asked that the separate start be eliminated so that they could fully contend for the cup on an equal basis with spinnaker boats.

In 1994 the Regatta Committee decided that any special individual-boat non-spinnaker handicap rating adjustment factors would not be included in the rating used to handicap boats contending for the Ladies Cup. However, to compensate for their lack of a spinnaker the Committee initiated a 12 second/mile rating adjustment for all competing non-spinnaker boats.

Before the 2010 season, the membership considered the question of opening competition for the cup to non-member racers, but while all agreed that non-members were most welcome to race for all other trophies awarded in the regatta, the members voted to retain the original restriction limiting competition for the Ladies Cup to LCYC members.

LADIES CUP
• SAMUEL de CHAMPLAIN TROPHY •

First on Corrected Time — Any Division, Class, or Club
20th Consecutive Awarding — 2011

In 1992, when the winner of the Ladies Cup was changed from first-to-finish to first-on-corrected-time, the Ted Brooks trophy was changed from first-on-corrected-time to first-to-finish. However, the Ted Brooks Trophy may be awarded to any competitor regardless of division, class, or club. So this new award was created to be awarded to the LCYC Class A boat that was first to finish.

In 2001 the criteria was changed once again. Recognizing that the Ladies Cup is restricted to LCYC members and that it is possible that the boat that is first to finish on corrected time may not be an LCYC member, this award henceforth will be awarded to the boat that has the best corrected-time finish regardless of division, class, or club affiliation.

The trophy was in the LCYC archives, having been bought in a yard sale. It features a medallion bearing the likeness of Samuel de Champlain and the dates 1609-1909. The engraving is below the medallion.

Theodore F. Brooks of St. Albans presented the club with the Ted Brooks Perpetual Trophy on April 27, 1998 in memory of his wife, Evelyn, to be awarded annually to the boat which finished first on corrected time in the Ladies Cup Race, the winner to have his boat's name, year, and club initials engraved thereon annually, the LCYC to retain possession. [This text written by Commodore John W. Williams in 1968.]

In 1992 the Board of Governors voted that this trophy would henceforth be awarded to the first boat to finish in the Ladies Cup Race when it voted to return to the original and traditional criteria of awarding of the Ladies Cup to the LCYC boat that finished first on corrected time.

[Ted Brooks won the Ladies Cup four times during the Waterama years, in 1956, 1959, 1960, & 1961, in his 6 meter named Sue.]

Ladies Cup — Any Non-Member – First on Corrected Time / Challenge Trophy

LADIES CUP
• CHALLENGE TROPHY •

First-on-Corrected Time — Non-LCYC-Member
12th Consecutive Awarding — 2011

This trophy was in the LCYC archives. It was given to the club in the 1980s by someone who acquired it from an attic or yard sale. It's history is not know at this time. It is a three-handled 'loving cup' that was an LCYC trophy in some earlier era. Since the Ladies Cup itself is restricted to LCYC members, in 2002 this classy cup was activated as a a much-needed trophy to recognize the boat that finishes first on corrected time among non-LCYC competitors in the Ladies Cup race.

Ladies Cup — Jib and Main – Class A / Failey Trophy

LADIES CUP RACE
• N.F. FAILEY TROPHY •

First on Corrected Time — Class A - Jib & Main Division
31st Consecutive Awarding — 2011

This trophy from the 1920s was bought by David Schaefer for $6 at a yard sale in 1981 and returned to the club. At that time not many non-spinnaker boats raced in the Ladies Cup Race, so one award was sufficient. In 1999, in recognition of the growth in Jib & Main Division, a new trophy was created for Class B and the Failey Trophy became the trophy for Class A.

Ladies Cup — Jib and Main – Class B / Dewey Mead Trophy

LADIES CUP RACE
• DEWEY MEAD TROPHY •

1977-98 — First on Corrected Time — Class D - Spinnaker Division
1999-... — First on Corrected Time — Class B - Jib & Main Division
34th Awarding — 2011

Created in 1977 in memory of Dewitt E. Mead, a member who died in 1976 while scuba diving to tend to his mooring at this home in Charlotte. Dewey had raced in Class D, so this trophy was originally for that class. Reconfiguration of the classes in 1993 eliminated that class and idled the trophy. Later, growth in non-spinnaker racing created a need for a second Jib & Main trophy, and in 1999 the Mead trophy became the perfect solution.

Ladies Cup — Spinnaker – Class C / Ingalls Cup Trophy

LADIES CUP RACE
• INGALLS CUP TROPHY •

First on Corrected Time — Class C - Spinnaker Division
39th Awarding — 2011

In 1972 Mrs. J.W. Ingalls of Glens Falls NY discovered this beautiful trophy amongst the belongings of her late father. The circumstances by which the cup came to her father were unknown, but the inscriptions on the cup indicated that it was an award for some long-ago LCYC event. Mrs Ingalls returned the trophy to LCYC with the wish that it be used by the club in some appropriate manner befitting it beauty and heritage. In 1973 the Board of Governors designated it the "Ingalls Cup," to be awarded to the Class C yacht that finished first on corrected time in the Ladies Cup Race.

Ladies Cup — Spinnaker – Etchells Class / Hal Greig Trophy

LADIES CUP RACE
• HAL GREIG TROPHY •

First Boat to Finish — Etchells Class, Spinnaker Division
3rd Consecutive Awarding — 2011

In June 2009 Hal Greig died of a rare and little-understood brain disease. Hal had been a member of LCYC 1970-1980 and 2002-2005. In the latter period, with the advent of the Etchells fleet at LCYC Hal partnered with Bob Goodwin in Senior Moment. Hal was an early member of the board of the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center where he was in charge of developing the youth and adult sailing classes, getting sailing added as a UVM phys ed option, creating the high school racing program, and establishing the Center as the home of the UVM intercollegiate racing program.

In recognition of Hal's love of sailing and high quality racing, his early support of the Etchells class at LCYC, and his life-long commitment to providing access and training opportunities to new generations of youth who might not otherwise learn to sail, the LCYC Regatta Committee, with funds donated by members of Etchells Fleet 25 and others, created a new trophy in Hal's name to be awarded to the first Etchells to finish in the annual Ladies Cup Race.

The trophy is made of black granite with a laser-etched image of two Etchells locked in a hard-driving dual to windward. Most fittingly, the first boat to win the new trophy was Senior Moment, now owned and sailed by Don Brush and Bob Schumacher.

Lady Skipper — Spinnaker - Class A / Sherman Trophy

LADY SKIPPER RACE
• SHERMAN TROPHY •

First on Corrected Time — Spinnaker Division - Class A
39th Awarding — 2011

The Lady Skipper Race was created in 1973 by Regatta co-chairs Charles R. Bowen and William C. Brown III to be a race in which the skipper from pre-start to finish is to be a woman; nine boats were entered in that first race. This trophy was given to the club in 1976 by Tom & Ollie Sherman to provide a permanent traveling trophy. For many years it was the only such trophy awarded and was given to the first boat to finish on corrected time among all classes. As the racing fleet grew, other traveling trophies were added and this became the award for Class A, Spinnaker Division.

MacDonough — Jib & Main - Class A

COMMODORE MACDONOUGH RACE
• JIB & MAIN DIVISION - CLASS A •

First in Class on Corrected Time — Shorter Course
There is only one trophy given in this race, for first overall on corrected time – long course.

In 1968 John A. Williams, then Commodore of LCYC, in conjunction with the Lake Champlain Racing Conference, organized a 73.6 nm race to commemorate the victory of an American fleet commanded by Commodore Thomas Macdonough over a British fleet on September 11, 1814 at Plattsburgh Bay. The original race course, still used for Classes A & B, consisted of only two marks, the HBN at Point au Roche to the north and Diamond Island to the south. In the late 1970s a shorter course was created for other classes.

In 1971, John Williams conceived a unique trophy to be awarded annually to the winner of this race on corrected time. The trophy consists of a section of the actual rib of the USS Saratoga, Commodore Macdonough's flagship in the battle, and an American 12 pound cannon ball retrieved from the lake bed in Plattsburgh Bay. These two most appropriate object are securely fastened to a modern wooden base resulting in a trophy that combines abstract beauty and historical symbolism appreciated by Lake Champlain sailors.

[The above text, slightly modified to reflect the current courses, was first published in the 1972 LCYC Log.]

The currently-known best elapsed time of 11:08:12 for the 73.6 nm course was set in 1999 by Frankly Scarlett, a Soverel 33 skippered by Dave Powlison and John Harris. Present club records go back only to 1996.

Unfortunately, there are no known records of results from before 1996.

Odziozo — Jib & Main - Class A

ODZIOZO RACE
• JIB & MAIN – CLASS A •

First in Class on Corrected Time
29th Consecutive Awarding — 2011

This race was created in 1982 by Commodore Bob Dunn and Regatta Chair Bob Penniman to be one of the two Lake Champlain Racing Conference races sponsored by LCYC (the Macdonough being the other). Since 1968, when LCRC was formed, the Ladies Cup Race had doubled as an LCRC race, with a second race a day later to provide the two-race LCRC format. But in 1982 the Board of Governors decided that the Ladies Cup Race should henceforth be a stand-alone event, and the need for a new two-day race came about. The Odziozo Regatta was the result.

Until 2001 the regatta was a two-day event. One day featured a single race, usually mostly or totally in the broad lake using LCYC racing marks, government marks, or both. The other day featured two races, one in the morning, a short break for lunch, then an afternoon race. These two races were traditionally windward/leeward. usually using a windward drop-mark controlled by a chase boat to ensure windward/leeward legs, with the length and number of the legs determined by the winds at the time.

In 2001, after years of declining participation, the LCRC format for organized lake-wide racing ended. The club decided to keep the race in its schedule as a one-day race with racers from other clubs invited to participate in the hope that the race would continue in its intended purpose to foster cross-club competition.

There never have been any class trophies for this race. The only trophy is the Adventure Trophy for first overall on corrected time. Regrettably, for many years race records were not retained.

Odziozo — Overall Winner / Adventure Memorial Trophy

ODZIOZO RACE
• ADVENTURE MEMORIAL TROPHY •

First Overall on Corrected Time — Combined Results

Engraved on back:
"This piece was created by Jack Spaulding Chase in 1983 under commission from Robert Gilbert Dunn and Francoise Prince Dunn in honor of his parents Harry Smith Dunn and Eugenia Parker Dunn. The Chases join the Dunns in dedicating this work to those determined pioneers who built the good boat Adventure during the winter of 1779 and with God's permission undertook a river voyage of more than 1000 miles, overcoming the hazards of cold, current, smallpox, hostile indians, boiling rapids, hunger, fatigue and the uncharted wilderness in their pursuit to reach their destination and join in the establishment of a settlement which is now Nashville, Tennessee."

One-Design Advancement — Significant Contribution Award / Kimura Cup

• KIMURA CUP TROPHY •

Recognition of Contributions to One-Design Racing at LCYC
12th Awarding — 2011

The modern club has had three one-design fleets. In the period 1972-80 there were Tanzer 22s at every club on the lake, and the LCYC T-22 owners formed a lake-wide class-sanctioned association that hosted four Northeast Regionals of up to 25 boats during that period. In 1995 John Kimura, Regatta Chairman, advocated developing a JY 15 one-design program at the Club. In 2001 Dave Powlison initiated and fostered a transition from the JY 15 to the Etchells, and obtained from the class association the designation of Lake Champlain as Etchells Fleet 25.

The history of this three-handled loving-cup trophy is not known. The trophy was in the LCYC archives and was activated as the Kimura Cup in recognition of John's one-design efforts. The purpose of this traveling trophy is to publicly recognize the person or persons that make a significant contribution to the advancement of one-design racing at LCYC.

Schuyler Island — Jib & Main - Class A

SCHUYLER ISLAND RACE
• JIB & MAIN – CLASS A •

First on Corrected Time — Jib & Main Division - Class A
44th Running — 2011

First run Sept 7, 1968 as the Schuyler Reef Race, renamed the Schuyler Island Race the following year, it was one of four races created by Commodore John Williams (the other three races were around Appletree Shoal, all Four Brothers Islands, and Juniper Island.) John conceived this race as a figure 8, leaving Schuyler Reef buoy to port, the island to starboard, and the Reef buoy again to port. In the mid-1980s the return reef rounding was eliminated when the buoy was moved from the deep south end of the reef to the shallow north end, making rounding inside it too risky. The race became the traditional last race of the year, which it remained until 1974 when the Hot Ruddered Bum Race was created and made the season-ender.

There have never been any trophies for this class. For many years the traditional prizes, awarded in the clubhouse soon after the end of the race, were a bottle of wine for first in each class, a six-pack of beer for second, and a liter of ginger ale for third. It was also a tradition that none of the awards left the clubhouse, having been shared among all racers gathered around the warmth of a cozy fire in the clubhouse fireplace.

Regrettably, for many years race records were not retained.

In the mid-1980s the return reef rounding was eliminated when the buoy was moved from the deep south end of the reef to the shallow north end, making rounding it too risky. The race became the traditional last race of the year, which it remained until 1974 when the Hot Ruddered Bum Race was created and made the season-ender.

There have never been any trophies for this race.

TEA KETTLE RACE

17th Awarding — 2011

This race was created in 1963 by Regatta Co-Chairs Bill Brown III and Chuck Bowen. For several years LCYC had provided a start for the Mallets Bay Boat Club Coffee Pot Race, an informal race for MBBC members returning to their club from winter storage at Shelburne Shipyard. Brown & Bowen decided we should use the same start for a similar race for LCYC members. Thus was born the Tea Kettle to go along with the Coffee Pot. An old copper tea kettle became the first traveling trophy. Other tea kettles were added in later years as more classes developed. By 1995 the non-spinnaker class had grown such that a new trophy was created for the Jib & Main division. By 2003 the number of boats had grown enough that a new trophy was created for Jib & Main Class B, and this kettle became the Class A trophy.

Wed Night Races — A History

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES
• A HISTORY •

38th Consecutive Season — 2011

First created by John Dinse in 1963 when the club was reborn at its present location, Wednesday racing was a format for training new members how to race. Eventually these races served their purpose and were dropped. Wednesday races were started again in 1974 by Regatta Chair Dale Hyerstay for much the same purpose as before. But this time the races grew in popularity each year, and they have become the mainstay of the LCYC summer racing season.

In 1992 Regatta Chair Jeff Hill began a program to attract non-spinnaker racers. John Kimura, Jeff's successor, expanded the effort to include recruitment and training and asked Dale Hyerstay to organize and run the program. By 1995 the non-spinnaker racers numbered nearly as many as spinnaker racers.

Monthly burger burns were added on 1989, and were increased to every other week in 1995.

At the time the Jib & Main division was growing, but there were few awards for that group. In 2005 the Board designated that this traveling trophy would recognize the Jib & Main boat that finished the season first overall in its division in the Wednesday Night Series races.

Weekend Series — Jib and Main Overall Winner / Cannon Trophy

20th Consecutive Awarding — 2011

This trophy is a solid brass 10 guage starting cannon mounted on a cast iron carriage. It was used for many years as the starting gun for the club's races. But it was heavy and awkward to use, so eventually the club switched to a 10 guage shotgun. The cannon was retired to a clubhouse closet.

By 1992 non-spinnaker racing had begun to grow to significant numbers, so a new Jib & Main division was added to the club's long-standing weekend series. A special trophy was needed that would provide to the top non-spinnaker bot in the series the same distinctive recognition that the Billado Trophy did for the top spinnaker boat. Commodore Chuck Bowen and Regatta Chair Jeff Hill resurrected the venerable cannon, had it mounted on a mahogony base, and a new tradition was born. In 1997 Bob Goodwin, having the trophy at home as that year's winner, completely refurbished the cannon and modified the base to make it better able to display winners' names.

In 1992 and since, the Cannon series includes the Tea Kettle, Ladies Cup, Schuyler Island, and Hot Ruddered Bum races.

44th Consecutive Awarding — 2011

Horace U. Ransom, on behalf of the Board of Governors, established the General Francis W. Billado Trophy during the autumn of 1967 in memory of past Vice Commodore Francis W. Billado, to be awarded annually to the boat which finished first on corrected time in the seasonal handicap races sailed with novice crews, the competitors to be members of the LCYC; and the winner to have his boat's name, and the year, engraved thereon annually; and the LCYC to retain possession. [Text written by Commodore John W. Williams in 1968.]

For many years the weekend races comprising the Billado series did not have separate names, but rather were designated Billado I, Billado II, etc. The named races then were not part of any series. There came a time when skippers said there were too many weekend races. Their solution was to drop the no-name races and instead incorporate the Tea Kettle, The Ladies Cup, the Schuyler Island, and the Hot Ruddered Bum races as the Billado Series.

Yachtsman of the Year — William B. Archey Trophy

YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR
• WILLIAM B. ARCHEY TROPHY •

Outstanding Participation in and Service to the Club
39th Year — 2011

In 1973 the Board, under Commodore Robert W. Henshaw, created an annual award to give special recognition to a club member, not then an officer or board member, who has shown outstanding participation in and service to the club.

To honor the Yachtsman of the Year the Board decided to use a very special historic LCYC artifact, a large solid-brass cannon on a mahogany base, reacquired by the club earlier that year after having been forgotten in storage for 35 years.

In 1982, under Commodore Robert Dunn, the Board determined that the cannon was such an historic and monumental relic of early LCYC, having been used as the club's ceremonial cannon from 1909 to 1938, that it should become the ceremonial cannon of the modern club as well. Jay Trumper refurbished it and modified it to be able to fire today's 10-guage shells.

To replace the cannon as the traveling Yachtsman of the Year trophy the Board acquired a large brass hanging oil lamp. Recognition that year went posthumously to William B. Archey, a fun-loving, gregarious, bear of a man who had died too young that year. Bill loved the club and helped out with anything and everything. He was an avid family cruiser as well as a diligent but mostly non-competitive racer.
The Board believed that Bill was a notable representative of the type of member the Yachtsman of the Year award was intended to recognize and they memorialized him by naming the new trophy in his honor.

Youth Sailing — Skipper of the Year Award / The 'Endurance' Trophy

YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM
• ENDURANCE TROPHY •
JUNIOR SKIPPER OF THE YEAR

8th Awarding — 2011

The Endurance Trophy was commissioned for the LCYC Junior Sailing Program by Luis Gonzalez in 2004. Here is the text of his donation document:

Looking to the past for models of inspired leadership, the legendary 1914 expedition of Sir Edward Shackelton and his crew remind us that we are capable of far more than we realize. With healthy doses of optimism, resourcefulness, responsibility, patience, and integrity we can overcome any challenge.

Shackelton's attempt to cross Antarctica overland in 1914 resulted on one of the most incredible survival and rescue stories of all time. His ad for crew read: "Men wanted for journey. Small wage, bitter, long, cold months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success." He named his boat endurance after his family's motto, "By endurance we conquer."

In August of 1914 they set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, still half a continent away from their intended base, the endurance became trapped in and eventually crushed by the Antarctic ice pack. Shackleton led his 26 crew members to safety some 17 months later. During this period the crew survived the deep freeze of an Antarctic winter, killer whales, hurricane-force winds, treacherous seas, a 1000 mile passage to South Georgia Island in an open boat, and an exceedingly difficult climb over the island's snow covered mountains to the whaling station on the other side.

Sir Raymond Priestly, British geologist, explorer, and crewmember commented: "For scientific leadership, give me Scott. For swift and efficient travel, Ammundsen. But when you are in a hopeless situation, when there seems to be no way out, get down on your knees and pray for Schackleton."

And so, in the spirit of that skipper's leadership, bravery, and resourcefulness, and the trust and willpower of his crew – and with the blessing of Shackelton's heirs – the perpetual trophy Endurance is to be awarded to the LCYC Junior Skipper of the Year.

Engraved in thick glass below a photo of Shackleton's boat in pack ice, all mounted vertically above the base:

"By
Endurance,
We
Conquer."
