Race Committee Volunteers Needed!

Dear Club Members,

We need Race Committee Volunteers!

Edit: Thanks for all the new signups since this posting! Just a few to go.

There are 35 sailboat races at Lake Champlain Yacht Club this summer. A Principal Race Officer (PRO) has been assigned to each race, and he/she will be responsible for all of the mechanics of running the race and for making the difficult decisions. Each race also needs a Race Committee comprised of a leader and two assistants. Racing skippers and others have volunteered for most of the races, but we need RC teams for a few more events. Would you be willing to serve?

The events needed are listed in the RC Signup sidebar.

You do not need to be a racer to serve as a Race Committee leader. You will help the PRO aboard the comfortable RC Boat Dinse (stable, sheltered, full marine head) to conduct the race. Your duties would be to recruit 2 adult friends to help you, assist the PRO with getting the Dinse off and on the dock, check in boats on the race course, raise and lower signal flags on command from the PRO, observe the weather and events on the course, and record the finish time of each of the racers as they cross the finish line at the Dinse. No special skills required – just a willingness to do some work and follow instructions.

Serving as RC is a great way to learn more about sailboat racing, and provides a front-row seat for an exciting event. Please contact me or Keith Kennedy, the Chief PRO, if you would like more information about what is involved.

If willing, please sign up for a Race Committee assignment on the LCYC website (http://lcyc.info/) . On the right-hand side of the main web page you will see a section labeled “RC SIGNUP” where available races are listed. Click on the race you are interested in, and follow the instructions. If you have any difficulty completing the process, please contact Jason Hyerstay or me.

Thank you for helping with this important work for our Club,

Gerry

LCYC is a member-run yacht club located in a sheltered cove on the southwest shore of Shelburne Bay in Shelburne, Vermont, USA. We offer moorings, activities, and community for our members, most of whom own a sailboat or powerboat. The object of the Club is to promote and encourage boating and sailing on Lake Champlain, while emphasizing racing, cruising, and education, without financial gain. Cruising

Lake Champlain offers some of the best freshwater cruising in North America. The beautiful scenery and charming lakeside destinations make it a great place to explore. LCYC organizes several rendezvous events. Spontaneous cruising events also materialize throughout the season. We have a number of scheduled events planned for the summer season. Cruisers are out and about just about every weekday and weekend throughout the summer.

Lake Champlain Yacht Club has an active junior sailing program, open to all children ages 8-17. We use Optimist prams and Flying Junior dinghies for instruction and racing. Full and half-day sessions are offered for all ability levels over an eight week period each summer. All of our Instructors are US Sailing certified and have extensive experience.
